We arrived in Horta, on Faial Island<\/a> in the Azores on Sunday morning (6\/2) around 4:00 am local time (10:00 pm MT).\u00a0 It was a long, and often \u201cspicy\u201d 10 \u00bd days, but we finally stopped<\/em> moving!\u00a0 After a short sleep, we had to clear customs and were desperate to walk on land!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather was cool and rainy but that didn\u2019t stop us – so off we went to the famous \u201cPeter\u2019s Sport and Caf\u00e9<\/a>\u201d \u2013 a historical landmark and one of the most famous sailor bars in the world\u2026 AND known for their excellent Gin!\u00a0 We visited \u201cmultiple times\u201d to sample the local fare such as limpets (Lapas<\/a>) and lupini beans (Tremocos<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After any passage, there are lots of \u201cboat chores\u201d including laundry, re-provisioning, cleaning the boat and more.  One of the reasons we joined the ARC Rally was because they arrange marina berths, repairs, island tours, social activities and such, so once the \u201cchores\u201d were done, we went on a \u00bd day tour of the island, stopping at the Queijaria O Morro<\/em> cheese factory.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n

After the tour, we had lunch at Restaurant Atletico<\/em><\/a>.<\/em> As we walked in, the boys from Ohana of Newport<\/em> (4 South Africans), started clapping, cheering loudly, and shouting \u201cWell Done Moxie, Winners of the Race\u201d.  Very embarrassing, but we sat down, ordered drinks, and thought nothing more about it\u2026. Until Gavin came over with 2 shots of tequila and challenged Jeff and Anthony\u2019s manliness because they were drinking 2 small beers!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

One look at Ohana\u2019s table showed they had been there awhile \u2013 an empty bottle of white wine AND an almost empty bottle of tequila.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

 As we chatted, they said they \u201cdidn\u2019t start sailing until they ran out of whiskey\u201d.  So we sent over 4 shots of Jack Daniel\u2019s (Jeff\u2019s idea) and challenged their<\/em> manliness \u2013 4 South African sailors sitting around in bibs, drinking white wine?? What\u2019s wrong with this picture??<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
